So apparently you really can’t kill a B&S EX550 motor. Right after browsing for my dream Honda push-mower online, I took Lurktastic’s advice and pulled the spark plug to try clearing the hydro-lock. After several plug-in-out-in-out-in-out cycles and actually swapping in an old plug I had laying around, it is running. As smooth as normal actually. And making a horrific blue cloud of burned oil. Video to prove after jump - sorry about it being portrait.
I imagine it will take a while to clear all of the residual oil out of the intake/carb. I’m pretty sure at this point that when I tipped the mower to clear the vine wrapped around the blade that it sucked basically an entire crankcase full of oil into the PCV. Tomorrow I’ll get a new air filer, spark plug and oil and see how it does.
Original post:
Hit a tall patch and it died suddenly. Cleared the blade and when it came back it sounded like it was knocking bad and looked like it was burning oil. Then it belched oil everywhere and died. Carb is full of oil. I’m thinking the head went... Any ideas? Repairable? Worth repairing? Any possibility it just sucked in oil when I tipped it over to clear it and I just need to clean out the intake?

I did the same damn thing yesterday. I tipped it toward the carb side (stupid, I know) and it vomited oil out the intake via the crankcase ventilation line. It also made it into the cylinder, as it hydro locked when I tried to start it. I had to pull the spark plug and pull start it half a dozen times to clear the oil from the cylinder, but once I replaced the old stuff with a new plug, air filter, and oil, it ran like a champ after a little carb tuning. I got one complete mow out of it before the fucker died again. Good luck.

Thanks. Yeah, I know I was stupid and tipped it the wrong way. It was getting dark and I just wanted to wrap it up. I think something is in the cylinder. I got it to turn over once and it started backfiring out of the intake. It sounded like it was almost smoothing out then it died again. Checked the oil and it was totally empty. I had a bottle of SAE30 with like 4 oz left that I tossed in, but it wouldn’t turn over. Doesn’t appear to be leaking any oil. I’ll run to the store in the AM and grab a new air filter, plug, and bottle of oil and we’ll see!

If you think something is in the cylinder, pull the spark plug out and grab a flash light. You should be able to remove the blade and use a wrench to turn the motor by hand and see if anything is in the cylinder. Can you find any spot that looks like where the oil was all coming from?
I once was mowing the lawn with this one mower my dad had and out of the blue it just started belching out extremely thick white smoke. On flat ground, no less. I stop, and I leave it the hell alone (this was many years ago), and when he gets home, he asks why I stopped, I told him, he goes and starts it and finishes the lawn like nothing ever happened.
I’m not bad with little engines, but I’ve never had to fix one that had any of those symptoms, so unfortunately, I really have no idea where to start on that one...

Impossible to kill a B&S lawn mower engine? oh yeah, all the ones we had always rusted to shit in the shield before the engine had any hit. One even ran so well/probably have some funny buisness done to it’s throttle that we used it to chew up the hedge-clippings... It just ate that without any complaint.

I recently scored a well used 10 y/o Honda GCV160 engined mower for $40, I used to tinker with B&S engines, even bought a new B&S 190 Quantum mower last year, and horded B&S motors on a shelf for parts. Also, I had Tecumseh and Kohler engined mowers in various stages of life.
I’m impressed with how good these GCV160 Hondas are, if you are looking around for a replacement, I recommend these. Mine is awesome.
